.wk1.xls file extension

I upgraded our accountant to Office 2007 (from 2003) last week and now all of
her Excel spreadsheets have the file extension xxxxxx.wk1.xls. They open OK.
We don't use Lotus Notes and never have. Anyone know why this happened?
Has it happened to anyone else?

The extension is .xls which is the 2003 format excel file.
Upgrading does not impact on earlier docs / data

Thank you for your post, but I am well aware of the file extensions for
Office 2003. I am interested in where the wk1 part came from and was giving
what I thought was pertinent information. Before the upgrade the extension
for all her spreadsheets was normal (.xls) and after all had .wk1 prepended
to the .xls extension. It is very wierd. I suspect she did something, but
what?
