WLAN syncing

I have recently set up a WIFI Wireless lan between my
laptop and desktop. I have searched and searched for a
way to sync my calendar, tasks, and contacts (notes and
journal would be good, but not necessary), but the only
way I've found to do it is over the internet using email
attachments.

Can this be done directly? I assumed this kind of thing
was commonly done in corporate network settings, but I
can't seem to find any info on it. Maybe I am searching
using the wrong terminology.
