Won't save as .doc

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Word sporadically won't let me save my .doc files. When it does this I can only save as .docx or .pdf. The error message I get is is that the disk is full, which it isn't. It suggest closing other application or saving to another disk, neither of which work. Ideas. (Caution, I'm a rookie)

Try running the OS X Disk Utility app. Select your HD & click the Repair
Disk Permissions button.
