Won't update office XP Pro

E

E. Boggs

I am religious about the updates to the programs. I run them ALL. I have
SP1 & SP2 all of the updates that were ever placed on the site are loaded.
The usual machine glitches happen and I was forced to "Restore" to an
earlier date. This happened when I did the office update and the Nvidia
updates. Well, now I tried to check for new updates and I get:

Error! Unable to check for updates on this computer Help

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this
computer. This may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

a.. You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
b.. There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the
Office Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page
and try running detection again.
c.. Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously
applied Office updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden
directory on your computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after
update installation completes because they need to be referenced for future
update operations. If the files are missing you will not be able to apply
Office updates. You may also be unable to uninstall Office products as a
result of the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product Support for
assistance.
d.. You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from
Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more
information see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install
Source if Unavailable.

Ok, now what the heck do I do? Uninstall the program and start over? IF I
DO THAT, will I be able to use my "upgrade" CDs to reinstall? I don't have
the original office disks anymore, heck I threw them away years ago. If I
do totally reinstall it, will the updates that I have already done actually
show up and become available to update AGAIN?

How come I got screwed up like this and how do I get back on the "Update"
wagon?

Hi, E.

See if this helps:

1. Deleting IE Cache.

In cases where the temporary Internet explorer cache folder is running out
of allotted space, you may be not be able to download the Office Update
control. You can free up space by deleting the Temporary Internet Files
cache using the "Delete Files" button in the "General" tab under "Tools |
Internet options" menu.

2. Check IE's security settings.

Ensure that your IE browser allows / prompts registering of signed Active X
controls. Follow the steps below to add http://office.microsoft.com to the
list of Trusted Sites so that the Office Update ActiveX control can load
successfully.

1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options and then click the
Security tab.
2. In the list of Web content zones, click the Trusted sites icon.
3. Click Sites.
4. Clear the Require Server verification (https) for all sites in this
zone check box .
5. In the Add this Website to the zone box, enter the Internet address
http://office.microsoft.com.
6. Click Add.
7. Click OK, and then click OK again.

3. Deleting Office Update detection folder.

Also try deleting the C:\Program Files\OfficeUpdate11 folder which contains
the detection catalog and downloaded patch files used by the site.

4. Deleting ActiveX control.

The Office Update ActiveX control can get into a bad state in certain
conditions and should be reinstalled. First close IE. Then delete the file
c:\Windows\opuc.dll for Windows 9X and Windows XP and c:\Winnt\opuc.dll for
Windows 2000.

Try going back to http://office.microsoft.com/OfficeUpdate/ to perform
detection again. If it still fails, follow the steps below.

5. Temporarily turn off Personal Firewall, Download Manager, Pop-up
blockers and Web Acceleration products

If there are Personal Firewall, Download Manager, Pop-up blockers, or Web
Accelerator products installed, temporarily turn off these products and try
detection again. Popular products include:

· Get Right (Download Manager)
· Download Accelerator
· Zone Labs (Personal Firewall)
· Norton Personal Firewall
· McAfee Personal firewall

If none of those works:

Click Start/Run then type Regedit and click OK.

1. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products and locate the product name
(in the right hand panel) There is an entry for every product called
ProductName.
2. With the entry for your Office product selected, export
this entry for backup (in case anything goes wrong
and you need to reinstate it).
3. Then delete the entry from your registry. Restart computer.
4. Then please insert the Office Installation CD to run Setup for Office
again to reinstall Office on the computer to the original folder on your
computer.
5. After installation, try the Office Update site again.

Susan,

Well, the list was long but I did them all in order. It didn't correct the
problem. Should I "undelete" the files and folders that were deleted going
through the instructions? I get a new error message after I did the final
step and tried to run setup from my installation CD that says: "This patch
could not be opened. Verify the patch package exists and that you can
access it or contact the vendor etc..."

Do you have any more ideas? I imported the regedit product name again to
get my registry back to where it was.

Hello,

I tried all the following suggestions but still get the
following message. I am using W98 and upgrading to SP1 for
Office XP Pro.

"C:\config.msi\PT62B1.tmp file has been updated by other
means & can no longer be updated by this patch. Call your
patch vendor."

I downloaded from the web site and also tried to update
directly from the oxpsp1.exe file.

I called the MS help center and got a case # but couldn't
wait the 90 minute wait time.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Doug

Try this one to get rid of the Windows installer data (note it's similar but
a different key than step five below):

1. On the Start menu, click Run.
2. In the Open box, type "Regedit" (without the quotation marks) and then
click OK.
3. Locate and expand the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Installer\Products
4. Below the \Products key, select each 32-character {GUID} until you find
the one whose ProductName value matches your version of Office.
5. With the 32-character {GUID} for your Office product selected, export
this entry for backup.
6. Then please delete the entry from your computer. Restart computer.
7. Then please insert the Office Installation CD to run Setup for Office
again to reinstall Office on the computer to the original folder on your
computer.
8. After installation, please check the issue again.

Houston, we have ignition! :)

Nuked the {GUID}, re-installed the office and after redoing SP1, SP2, and 7
updates, it appears that I am once again current in my Office updates!
Tadaaa!

You are now on my Christmas card list!

Thanks,

Elmer

One more thing: as a followup, could you tell me if your system had been
upgraded from Windows 95 or 98 to
Windows XP before the Windows Update problem started?
