Wood 2003

Have a letter created in Word 2003 with pictures inserted. Now when we open
the document, the pictures disappear. Have run the repair program in Word
with no change. This problem started to occur after we ran an online system
windows update. Please help. I am considering loading Word 2000 because
have not had any problems in the past with that program.

On the View tab of Tools | Options, do you have "Drawings" checked and
"Picture placeholders" *not* checked?

P

Peachy

Yes, I have the Drawings checked and the Picture placeholders unchecked. I
didn't have to change that.

Hi Peachy,

Are you using Print Layout view?

Are the pictures there when you use
File=>Print Preview
File=>Web Page Preview
or Print?

If not, were the pictures linked to the document rather
than saved within the .DOC file and has the .doc file
been moved from its original folder?

Hi Bob
Yes, I use print layout view whenever Im in Word. I changed the view but
the pictures didn't appear again. Freaky thing is, when I select "print
preview", no pics but when i then click on magnifier the pics return. Also,
even though I can't see any pics on the screen (in my document), when I print
it, the pics are all there!!!
I personally wouldn't know how to link pictures to a document only insert
them the standard way :)

Hi, Peachy. Reduce or turn off hardware acceleration in Start | Control
Panel | Display | Advanced.

P

Peachy

Thank you so much garfield-n-odie !!!! I reduced the level and the graphics
stay put now. Thanks to all who helped me. :)

The problem is with your grapics accelerator. The pictures should be there ,
but are not being displayed. Go to desktop, right click, click display, then
advanced, and then troubleshoot. Move the graphics accelerator slider to
midway on the scale where the direct x and 3d is turned off. This is a
workaround that I had to do. Works perfectly, but you lose some of the
functions in the graphics card, particularily on games.

This same crap happend to me and Microsoft won't respond to it. It has
nothing to do with Print preview or layout view, and also has nothing to do
with linking pictures. I inserted a picture into a word document just like
you and after I ran windows update I can no longer see the pictures.
Microsoft needs to read these so they can start helping their customers! If
I find out what it is I will write back.

You have to go to tools, options and view and check object anchors and
uncheck picture placeholders to fix this... I have messed with this for hours
and finally found it!! The Other things I have checked are startup task,
status bar, horizontal scroll bar, vertical scroll bar, which has nothing to
do with it really, windows in taskbar and field codes. under formatting
marks I have hidden text checked under print and web layout options I have
drawings checked white space between pages checked and vertical ruler checked
(for print view only) and under outline and normal options I have draft font
checked and all others are unchecked. try that and see if it works

Reply to Peachy--this may be too late, but others may find this useful: you
need a graphics driver update direct from Intel (or your graphics card maker).
I HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM: THE SOLUTION BELOW FIXED EVERYTHING AND MORE!
INSERTED PICTURES WON'T DISPLAY IN WORD 2002.
SUCCESS! THIS FIXED IT! I HOPE THIS MAKES IT EASIER FOR SOME OF YOU WHO
HAVE BEEN REALLY AGGRAVATED BY THIS PROBLEM AS I HAVE:
MY COMPUTER DISPLAY ADAPTER IS: Intel® 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family
To explore for drivers, try here: http://downloadfinder.intel.com
Or skip that step and just go here for Intel graphics drivers updates
(copy/paste in your browser)
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=1764&lang=eng
It's easy--just select your OS and click GO. Select the .EXE download and
SAVE so you can write it to a CD (you can make one archive copy--yes, I read
those agreements) in case you have to do a system restore--you won't have to
download it again.
For my Windows XP Home:
Intel(R) Chipset Graphics Driver Software UPDATE 11-8-2005 latest version
(from Intel only):
Windows XP select a download page (copy/paste to browser)
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...XP+Home+Edition&lang=eng&strOSs=45&submit=Go!
Item No. 4. Graphics Driver [WIN2K_XP1418.EXE] (5178KB) 14.18 11/8/2005
Or just copy/paste this to browser and go right to the download and SKIP ALL
OF THE ABOVE IF YOU HAVE THE SAME GRAPHICS CARD AS MINE
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...&OSFullName=Windows* XP Home Edition&lang=eng
REALLY EASY TO INSTALL:
First turn off all antivirus/antispyware. Just OPEN the .EXE file and the
wizard will run--installs automatically--don't have to do the complicated
stuff in the download page ReadMe file. When the wizard starts, close all
other windows and all applications if any are running. Then just click on
through the NEXT buttons. THIS FIXES THE PROBLEM IN WORD 2002 DOCUMENTS
WHERE INSERTED IMAGES ARE NOT VISIBLE EXCEPT WHEN YOU PRINT WITH PRINT
PREVIEW CHECKED IN THE PRINTER APP (images not visible in File dropdown
"Print Preview") or they disappear when you scroll, don't reappear--AND NOW I
CAN ALSO LEAVE THE ACCELERATION SET AT FULL. A BIG BONUS: IT ALSO COMPLETELY
FIXES THE PROBLEM IN Windows Media Player (9 or 10) WHERE DVD MOVIE IMAGES
HAVE LITTLE JAGGED EDGES, THEN THEY ARE AS GOOD AS POWERDVD (WMP USES THE
POWERDVD mpeg-2 CODEC. Haven't checked this with commercial downloaded
mpeg-2 codec for WM Player, but original problem appears to be with the Intel
graphics adapter old version driver. The new one is: 6.14.10.4421 after this
install). It also fixed the very tiny trace of jagged image edges in
PowerDVD. You can't get this driver update using Update Driver automatically
or otherwise from Microsoft or Windows Update--found it through this forum
and then going to Intel.

MICROSOFT TAKE NOTE: This driver update is WHQL Logo'd (so it says when I
run dxdiag), so WHY ISN'T IT AN AUTOMATIC UPDATE FROM MICROSOFT/WINDOWS
UPDATE? Or available from driver updates somewhere on microsoft.com???
