Word 03 - {PAGE } no matter what I try

Hello,
I am trying to set page numbers in a document in Word 2003. I go into
Insert>Page Numbers, say where I want them, and then click on Format
to tell it what style of numbers and what number to start. All that
happens is that {PAGE } appears on each page.

So I read this newsgroup for a while and I got to
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/numbering/PageNumbering.htm which, under Big
Idea #4 told me to open the Footer and use Shift + F9 to get the
brackets, I opened the footer in a new document, inserted the
brackets using Shift+ F9, and then copy pasted the code it suggested
into the brackets. All that happened was that each page now said
{ PAGE \* Arabic } or whatever I tried.

This didn't start happening until a few weeks ago when I began an
online class and received several Word documents from a professor -
hers all look like that with { PAGE } at the bottom and now anything
new I create does too. Perhaps it messed with my settings in a way I
don't understand. I would appreciate any help, and I apologize if
this has been addressed before - I did look in the archives to try to
see if it was there, but didn't find this particular problem.

Thanks!

Jill

This is just a display issue; what you're seeing are the field codes instead
of the field results. Press Alt+F9 to toggle field codes. Or clear the
"Field codes" check box on the View tab of Tools | Options. If the field
codes are printing, clear "Field codes" on the Print tab of Tools | Options
as well.
