Word 04 can't run updates and 08 crashes. I am told (by MS and Apple) there may a problem with my OS.

Before I do a reinstall of Leopard, I want to uninstall Office 04 and reinstall 08. Does this seem like a good idea? Maybe 04 was interferring with 08. A reinstall of the OS and all the downloaded programs is a pain!

How do I uninstall Office 04?
I think this is worth a try.

I think it's very unlikely that Office04 is "interfering" with Office08.
I run both on several machines with no problems.

You can uninstall Office04 by running the Remove Office application.

Frankly, if *Apple* is telling you that there may be a problem with your
OS, I can't imagine why you'd think that they're wrong. It sounds more
like you're just hoping, due to the inconvenience...

Are you going to do an "Archive & Install" or an "Erase & Install"?

I wouldn't do a "Remove Office" and would try the "Archive & Install" first.
If you have to do the "Erase & Install" it will erase them for you. :)
