Word 04 refuses input

When I launch Word 04 I can only get one or two input events (keystroke,
scroll bar) before the little colored ball begins to spin, refusing any
other input. Any suggestions?

What version of OS, what updates applied to Word?

Well, nevermind, because such consistent and reproducible problems in Word
usually respond to one of the standard troubleshooting measures, which you
will find listed here:

(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

Work through them one by one until something helps. If nothing does, post
back.
