Word 2000 - Bulleting gets applied to whole document, signature font won't stay configured

User has Word 2000 SP3 in Corp/Workgroup mode on a cleanly installed XP Home
system. Two problems happening that I can't figure out:

Whenever he positions the cursor where he would like to start using bullet
points, the entire document becomes bulleted. How is this happening? Is
there a global setting somewhere which should be checked?

Also, he uses Word as his email editor and has several custom email
signature files. He wants the font for the signature files to be Arial 11
but they keep reverting to Arial 10. Using Microsoft Outlook Rich Text or
HTML as format type, not Plain Text.

I seem to recall a setting about "Update template" or "Apply to whole
document" which may have been adjusted to try and fix the signature problem.
Perhaps this is what is causing the bullet points to act strangely?

Many thanks for any feedback.

It sounds like the Style in use is set to "Automatically update".

To rectify:
- Place your cursor in a paragraph that exhibits the behavior
- Go to Format/Style
- Click Modify
- Remove the tick from the "Automatically update" option

If this option is not selected then take a look at the Style
definition, modify the "Based on" style and check to see if it is set
to "Automatically update".

Beth,

I am experiencing the same problem. However I do not have any special Styles set and the ones that are there, "Automatically Update" is unchecked.

Any further assistance would be appreicated.

Hi Sean,

Check the Style again, make sure your curser is in a paragraph that
exhibits the behavior, and see if it has a "based on" style. If it
does then see if it is set to "Automatically Update".

Also, if you are using Word 2002 or Word 2003, make sure the Styles
and Formatting task pane is set to "Available styles" rather than
"Formatting in use".
