word 2000 crashes and turns off laptop

any ideas open word and after a period of time it just
cuts the power and laptop goes off!
done virus scans everything at my wits end

Are you sure this is Word. It isn't usual for it to cut the power. Have you
tried starting the laptop and leaving just a screensaver running to see if
it happens?
