Word 2000 crashing on start-up

Word opens as if nothing is wrong. It sits there for about
15 seconds saying requesting virus scan. Then it closes
out stating Windows has detected a problem and must close
down Word. It gives me an option to send a report to
Microsoft. When I do that it gives me an option to view
the error. The error message is:

AppName: winword.exe
AppVer: 9.0.0.3822
ModName: winword.exe
ModVer: 9.0.0.3822
offset: 00395c27
Exception information
code: 0xc0000005
Flags: 0x00000000
The following files will be included
C:\DOCUME~\\default\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER168.tmp.dir00
\appcompat.txt

I use Windows XP and have tried the following fixes:

Deleted the normal.dot and replaced with a good one.
Uninstalled Office, searched for any winword.exe files
after uninstall, deleted rouge winword.exe file, re-booted
and reinstalled Office.

All other Office programs work fine. Outside of
reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows and
all my other software (which may do nothing and take a
very long time) I can't think of anything else to do.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Open Norton Anti Virus and DISABLE the Office Plug-in option.
