Word 2000 error -- Not enough memory or disk space to run Microsoft Word

I was having the same problem with two computers here --
one has been having the issue since right before the new
year, and the other just started this week. Both are
Win98 computers and have the same symptoms -- Word is
launched, and after a minute or so, an error window pops
up saying "Not enough memory or disk space to run
Microsoft Word". After shutting that down, another white
window will pop up saying that system resources are
dangerously low. I'd seen several postings in the
newsgroup about looking at a document from an MVP
website. After reading through it a few times and never
finding anything I thought seemed directly related to my
problem, frustration finally led me to just try one of the
suggestions that seemed the most generic -- deleting the
Normal.dot file. And it worked!! Both computers are now
able to open Word with no problem. So give that a try and
see what happens. There's also a Knowledge Base Article
(#305498) that may help you if the MVP solution doesn't.

We never recommend *deleting* Normal.dot, which could cause you to lose
years of customizations. If you merely *rename* Normal.dot, the effect will
be the same, and you will be able to retrieve many of your customizations
using the Organizer.

Not to knitpick or anything, but let me quote directly
from the article I found at
http://word.mvp.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWordContent.
htm (Section 2-a-i): "Try deleting or renaming your
Normal.dot file...". I see your point and would also
recommend (in hindsight) that anyone who has performed
customizations to rename rather than delete.

I've recommended a change in this article. Although you may ultimately want
to delete a renamed Normal.dot (after you've mined it for all you can get
out of it), the only time deleting Normal.dot itself is reasonable is when
no significant customizations have been made. Since many users may have made
customizations (especially to toolbars) without realizing that they are
saved in Normal.dot, this boils down to the unwisdom of rashly deleting
Normal.dot in any situation.
