Word 2000 focus problem

Shannon

My problem is with Word 2000 working on Windows 98.
Currently this problem is related to several computers so
it is not specific to this computer.

When opening a previously saved word document or a word
doc from an Outlook attachment via it's icon, it seems to
have a focus problem. It will not allow text to be
highlighted and any menu operation that requires a pop up
window will open minimized. For example if I click on
file --> open, or view --> zoom, or spell check, the pop
up will not appear and the menu bar on the bottom of the
screen will start blinking blue. Thus requiring you to
click on the blinking menu bar to do anything else which
then minimizes the word doc and opens the pop up window.
To which I click what action is needed and then I maximize
the word doc. Once the doc is minimized then maximzed
there is no longer a problem.

If you open a doc via its icon then minimize and then
maximize it, again the problem is solved and no more
problems.

Also if you open word first to a blank doccument there are
no issues.

Only with saved doccuments.

This is a puzzling problem I have not heard of and if it
was only on one computer I would just forget about but it
is on several computers.

Anyone else having this problem or any idea how to fix it?

Hi Shannon,

If you use Norton AV then the "Office Plug-in" option found in Norton
Options under the Miscellaneous section is know to cause dialog boxes
to appear behind the application window. Try disabling the plug-in and
see if that resolves the issue.

Thank you Thank you Thank you :)

That did it. I thought I had ruled out Norton after
turning it completely off and the problem still
persisted. But turning off that feature has stopped the
problem. Thank you very much.

Hi Shannon,

You're welcome. :)

Unfortunately the option controls registering or unregistering a DLL.
What that means is it will continue to function even if you disable
the virus scanner. And we've found a few occasions where uninstalling
Norton left the DLL registered. <sigh>

I just wish Symantec would a) document the issue and b) fix the
problem in their add-in.
