Word 2000 freezes

D

Dave Eastham

If I try to open a saved document from Word 2000 the program freezes. I get
a message in a white box saying system is low on resources do I want to quit
word. If I double click on a word file in explorer the document opens OK.
This has only just started happening after two years running OK. I did the
winword /r from Run and got a fatal exception error in USER.EXE.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Dave, I am having exactly the same problem, also after two
years of no problems, and it's driving me crazy. I also
noticed a couple of other posts indicating the same
problem. I've tried putting in all updates to Windows and
Word, re-installing the program twice, eliminating all
other programs from the start menu so that the only
program to be running is Word, and bringing my antivirus
software current, and nothing works. Recently, I got high
speed internet and updated internet explorer, and I wonder
if either of these items is causing the problem, although
Word still freezes even if these programs are off.

If you figure out the answer to your problem, please reply
to your post.

Regards,
Peter

Hi Dave,

Since you are able to open documents from the Windows Explorer then
I'd say you have more than one Normal.dot available.

Locate Normal.dot and rename all occurrences found to OldNormal.dot.
Word will create a new one upon starting.

If this resolves the problem, any customizations can be copied to the
new Normal.dot via the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once
this is complete OldNormal.dot can be discarded. If the problem still
exists then you can delete the new Normal.dot and rename your
OldNormal.dot to Normal.dot.

If that doesn't resolve the problem then see if this article helps you
out:
