Word 2000 global template

Faye

We have had Word 2000 for several years. Suddenly,
everytime I exit it asks "Changes have been made that
affect the global template, Normal.dot. Do you want to
save those changes?" It asks this even if I open Word and
close it with no keystrokes in the document. The Auto
update document styles is not marked. We do have a server
but the Office products are loaded on each individual C:
drive. Any ideas?

Hi Faye,

Did you install new software recently? More often than not this is a
sign of a poorly behaved add-in. Many third-party manufacturers will
create an add-in to integrate their functionality with Word.
Unfortunately many modify your Normal.dot each time Word starts which
results in the prompt you are encountering.

Of course you can turn the prompt off but if you allow Word to
automatically save Normal.dot each time you exit Word then that
increases the likelihood of encountering a corrupt Normal.dot.

Go to Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any global
templates or add-ins listed. If so they are located in your
Word\Startup folder or Office\Startup folder. If more than one, move
them one at a time and try starting Word after each file is moved out
of the folder until you determine which one is causing the problem.

The location of the Word\Startup folder can be found under
Tools/Options/File Locations. The Office\Startup folder can be found
in the installation path.

Also, of course, you want to rule out a virus as the cause of the
prompt

If you have Norton AV, turn off the Office Plug-In. Other programs known to
do this because of Add-Ins that are not properly written are Microsoft
Works, EZ Photo, Adobe Acrobat, and something by Scansoft, perhaps their
latest PaperPort.
