Word 2000 hangs while browsing network resources...

I have a client whose users intermittently hang Word when
drilling through network shares. It appears that they
hang when they encounter a Word "owner file"
~$<file name>.doc
Word will eventually recover but this can delay the user
for close to 50 to 60 seconds at times.

Any suggestions?
