Word 2000 has encountered a problem & needs to close

I've had Office 2000 Premium installed on this computer,
with Windows XP Professional edition for over a year.
Within the past month I started seeing the error message
when I either try to open Word or a Word document,
(Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem &
needs to close.) The detailed message is;

AppName: winword.exe
AppVer: 9.0.0.6926
ModName: vbe6.dll
ModVer: 6.0.89.67
Offset: 000ebeb3

All of the other programs in this version of Office are
working just fine, but not Word. Can someone help? Thanks
in advance.
