word 2000, multiple dashes

i need a pointer for this problem. i typed multiple dashes on a line and word extended the line all the way across to the right. no matter what i cant seem to select and delete these lines. application help didnt give any pointers since i am not sure what to call this problem. the created lines seem to follow some rules as they shift around, moving to the ends of paragraphs at times, as i shift pages and paragraphs around. thanks
