Word (2000) "not responding" after typing a few words

My Microsoft Word locks up after I open and type a few
words. I then have to ctl, alt, del and end task. I have
done virus checks with Norton, found 7, quarantined and
deleted them. I am also up to date on all updates from
Microsoft. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks!

In order to be able to see or find Normal.dot, you have to have Windows'
Folder Options set to display hidden files and folders, as the user
templates folder is formatted as Hidden (heaven only knows why).

Hi Suzanne,
Thanks for your reply. I changed the hidden file option, found the normal.dot, deleted them; then emptied all my temp files, defragemented the hard drive, and rebooted the computer.
Still no luck.
Word freezes as the cursor is moved when opened.
Should I simply delete the program and try re-installing?
Thanks
Philipp

Certainly don't delete. You could uninstall and reinstall, but that rarely
helps. Have you investigated possible problems with the video driver?
Printer driver?

How do I look for problems with the printer driver? Video driver?
I am using a hp photosmart 7350. Do not know what video driver is installed - as I never use it?
Very unsophisticated with computers - simply a tool for me to do documents, email and spreadsheets.
Thank

OK - some more experiments. 12.35am, Nov 24, PST.
After uninstall/reinstall, deleting normal.dot, disabling NAV option, etc. etc., it seems like I can now open new files, type, and import pictures
Word still hangs intermittently when I do the following
- select and try to move a pictur
- save (though not always
- immediate hang when opening saved word file
If I go to cntrl.alt.del, it says the CPU is 100% - but, when I select a different application (such as IE) in the window, and then come back to Word, it is running again
I have found Microsoft's tech pages: 289506, 289634. Any thoughts.
Thank
Philipp

If you suspect problems with the printer driver, you delete it and
reinstall, preferably using an updated driver downloaded from www.hp.com.
Same for video driver: check the manufacturer's Web site to see if there is
an updated driver.
