Word 2000 Opens slowly over network

Word 2000 Sr1

I'm helping someone who works from home. Word will open fine on their pc
when they are not connected to their company via their VPN application. When
they are connected Word will take approximately 2 minutes to open and you
can see traffic going back and forth while we wait.

He is running Symantec Antivirus CE 8.0 and it doesn't appear it's related
to that.

I checked for network drives that may be mapped incorrectly or no longer
there ... and he has none.

I read some posts about certificates expiring that may cause this, but I'm
not sure on how to determine if this is the issue.

This has been going on for about a year.

If he opens the application on it's own ... it opens fine.

Any ideas?

Jason,

Just out of curiosity, does the document he's opening have any templates
associated with it?

Make sure that there is a locally installed printer driver and that the
default is not a networked printer.

I'm not entirely sure, but it appears that it's all documents. I will check.

Excellent suggestion, I had forgotten about that ... I'll let you know if
that resolves it.

This was the cause. When they're connected to the VPN client their pc can no
longer see the network printer. So word would wait to timeout to the default
printer and then open the document.

I set a local printer up as the default ... all is well.

Thanks again.

Thanks for confirming the problem.
