Word 2000 Page Numbers in Footer

WHY doesn't the footer accurately display the Page X of Y info in the footer of my document? I have tried inserting AutoText as well as inserting the separate field indications in the footer. The problem is with the total number of pages. If I print just pages 1 to 4, I get Page 1 of 1, Page 2 of 2 Page 3 of 3 and so on. UGH! Of course, it displays correctly in Print Preview.
