Word 2000 problems/errors

When I try to open a word document I get the following
error:
"The application must be installed to run. Please run
setup from the location where you installed the
application"
I tried to search for solutions and ended up re-installing
Word from my master CD. Still got the same error.
I then proceded to reformat and restore my computer to day
one, the way it came installed from the store the day I
bought it, with my Master CD's. This time it started
working normal. Then I had to go back to microsoft and
update Windows ME(19) critical updates. It was after this
that word 2000 stopped working again. If I open an
existing document the error is: "cannot find
<filepath>/<filename> you may have typed the name
wrong....If I just try to open Word it very very briefly
opens the word 2000 ID pop-up then closes with no error
almost like it has ben disabled. When I try to go to
microsoft online support, I'm prompted to input my product
ID # and microsoft says its invalid but my software in
legal (not pirated) so I wonder if the latest windows me
critical update has disabled my word 2000 thinking its not
a valid version.

Yes I have tried un-checking office plug-in, but it
doesn't help. I have also tried all resolutions from the
word mvp site but so far nothing has helped.

Yes, these I've already tried the 32 digit number is
there. None have worked and I have tried all microsoft's
solutions before I went to the trouble of re-formatting
and re-installing everything. As a last resort I
reformatted and WORD started to work normal the way it has
for the past 3 years. BUT once I went back to Microsoft
and updated OS with the 19 critical updates WORD stopped
working again. Because I have an OEM version that was
installed by Packard Bell I have also been in their
support forum asking for help, still no solution.

I'm afraid I've run out of ideas, then, but perhaps Beth Melton will have
something else. Beth?

Thanks for your help Suzanne. Before I posted I was at the
Word MVP site a few times trying all the solutions, it was
a helpful site but I still haven't found the fix or cause.
I'll keep pluggin away.

Dan, did you verify your Start menu is being shared by all users?

Check in your Control Panel in Password Properties and make sure on
the User Profiles tab you don't have "Include Start menu and Program
groups in user settings" enabled.

Typically this is the reason most encounter this error. It could be
one of the patches made a modifications to these settings as well.
