word 2000 runtime error and program termination [chb]

Running Word 2000 on winXP just started getting runtime
errors dialog: "Microsoft visual c++ runtime library"
text: "runtime error Program d:\...\winword.exe

The application has requesed the runtime to terminate it
in an unusual way. contact..."

I cant find any mention of this kind of error, anywhere,
can anyone explain it or at least point me to a reference
that might help me find a fix.

Word dies immediately after this message! I've tried
uninstalling word and the works package it came with
rebooting and reinstalling, but no improvement

Some Additional info:
WinXP & word 2000 with all service packs and critical
updates applied;
Problem occurs whether starting from program icon or .doc
file doubleclick.
I notice that the status line in word says something about
requesting virus checking just before it dies

Suzanne,

Thanks for your reply and links, Sadly, I still have the problem, even after
I:
0) Sucessfully started with the /a option
1) Disabled the NAV plugin (and NAV itself)
2) Deleted Normal.dot
3) Made sure the word startup folder was empty. It was.
4) Closed Word and deleted the key
\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Data
5) Upgraded to Adobe Acrobat reader v 6.01 (was at 6.0)
6) removed the one network printer driver (It was not the default, but I
did it anyway)

Now what??

thanks again,
Chuck

To All,
Good News!!!!!!

My winword200 appears to be working again! I thoink it was deleting the
Works plugin for Word (plus having done all the steps listed below!(?)) The
tip that seemed to help was knowledge Base article 320475. This is the link
given in another post, but I couldnt get it to work so I just typed in
320475 on the kb seach page and followed the instructions there. I hope this
helps some other stuggling soul!

Chuck

Note that you need to install *some* printer driver locally (it can be the
network printer you're printing to).
