Word 2000 SR-1 Not Loading

J

JE

I've got a client running Office 2000 Pro SR-1 whose having a problem with
Word.
When you launch Word, the splash screen comes up, but nothing else happens.
During this time however, WinWord.exe take up 100% of the CPU. All other
Office Apps work fine.

I've tried repairing the installation, uninstalling and reinstalling, and
upgrading to SR-1 from the original release.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

Such an issue may occur under several situations. The most causes are that:
1. There is add-in in Word 2000 which is incompatible with Word 2000.
2. Third party software affects Word process.
3. Others
Follow the steps below to see if it works.

#1 Go to Microsoft Update site to check and install all available updates.

#2 Come into Word safe mode
----------------------
Under Word safe mode, it doesn't load the third party add-ins, the global template normal.dot, Word setting registry keys, and the files
in the startup folder.
1. Click Start menu > Run.
2. Type winword /a, click OK.

Is Word 2000 working fine under Word safe mode? If it works fine under Word safe mode, please perform the following steps one by one
until the issue is fixed with Word normal start.

#3 Rename the Word registry key.
====================
The registry keys store those options that you can set from Word by changing menu options. The next time that you start Word, Word
rebuilds these registry keys by using the default settings.
1. Exit Word program. Click Start menu > Run.
2. Type regedit, click OK.
3. Locate the following registry key.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft Office\9.0\Word\Data
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft Office\9.0\Word\Options
4. Right click the registry key and choose Rename to rename Data as OLD_Data. Rename Options as OLD_Options.
5. Restart the Word program. If the issue persists, go to next step.

#4 Rename the Word global template Normal.dot file. By default, it is on the folder: C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates.

#5 check addins and Office startup folders.
================
1. Backup and then delete any files that are located in the following Office Startup folders:
Note: The folders may be hidden, please open My Computer, click Tools menu > Folder Options > on the View tab, check "Show hidden
files and folders" option > click OK to show the file extension.
-- C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup
-- C:\Documents and Settings\<User_Name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP, where User_Name is your Windows account
name

2. Go to Start > Run > Type regedit, click OK > if you find any sub key under the following registry key, please backup the Addins key
and then delete the sub keys under it.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\
If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Regards,

Emily Lin
