word 2000 sr-1

Recently word 2000 sr-1 on my system will not open. I can not open any of my word documents. It seems to lock up my entire system. I have tried to un-install and then re-install, I have also gone to the Microsoft web site to check on up-dates for windows. I also checked for any viruses and have found none. Has anyone else had this problem? And if so any suggestions as to a fix or any conflicts you might know of. MY system is Microsoft ME.
