Word 2000 SR1 errors

I can’t seem to uninstall my Word 2000. I have been getting some error
problems and I think its because I have corrupted files. I cant repair/remove
it either so that I can reinstall it and start over. I ran thorough virus
scans and MS Scandisk in hopes of repairing any possible problems. I even
used my Onboard Compaq Diagnostics and it didn’t detect any problems either.

When I try to access the E:\Setup.exe file on my CD-ROM disk via a DOS
prompt or through the auto play option or E:\setup in the “run†option in my
Start Menu or when I try to add/remove through the Control Panel, I get the
following error message in a pop-up dialogue box…â€This patch package could
not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access
it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows
Installer patch package.†I only have Word 2000 SP1 installed and am
currently downloading/reinstalling the other Office SP’s and related software
that isn’t installed with hope that I will “accidentally†run upon the files
that are causing these errors.

There is one other possibility…Because Microsoft no longer supports older
O/S and Office applications (including mine), my Windows 98SE or Word 2000
may be refusing to uninstall the SP1 in an effort to protect my Word/Office
2000 documents. Please tell me how I can totally uninstall and reinstall my
Word 2000 in order to resolve this pesky problem. I promise…I plan to upgrade
to a Vista Computer as soon as Microsoft works out the bugs (9-12 mos.), but
I need this Office 2000 to work for me now! Please research this thoroughly
and produce a viable solution as soon as you can. I am an advanced user (of
this Compaq and O/S anyway) and know how to fix a lot of stuff, but this has
me stymied.

One final question…do you have my update installation history and if so,
where can I find it and the archived programs? I’m inclined to believe that
these errors are caused by an installation wizard upgrade error through my
Office Updates. The nature of the text in the error box implies that this is
a patch (installation?). What patches would be needed for installing/updating
Word 2000 with WINDOWS 98SE as the O/S…specifically those for upgrading the
Installation Wizard? Where can I find these patches if not at Microsoft?
Surely, Microsoft has archived EVERY publicly available program, update and
information ever issued for its Operating Systems. Where are they, so that I
might find them?

Sincerely,
Steve

Yes...I sent you an E-mail before I saw the disclaimer. I have the original
CD-ROM (and a copy of same) registered to me and it cost me in 2000! I also
consider myself an expert at older systems (especially this Compaq...its my
baby and has so many upgrades/updates, its a wonder it doesnt blue screen me
or freeze up. Thats because of constant maintenance and up-to-date Virus
scans. I have another issue altogether, but Im waiting on a reply from Compaq
as it is one of thier utilities. They wont deal with this issue because its a
Microsoft application.

If you haven't gotten the problem fixed yet, search for the Windows
Installer Clean Up Utility. It is designed to help with this kind of
problem.
