Word 2000 StartUp Problems

HI,
I have Word 2000 SR-1 running on Win XP Home computer.
When I start WORD, the original Word startup panel shows
up and the screen freezes there. I have to END the
WINWORD process to get my computer back.

I posted earlier about this and one of the suggestions
was that I had a "corrupt" template. I have actually
deleted the NORMAL template. The program will start-up
just fine ONE time after that with the creation of the
new template. After that, when I go back to Word again,
the freezing-up problem occrus.

I have looked at the MVP site about this problem and have
tried all of the items including the deletion of the DATA
key in the registry named data for the Word 9.0 product.
This had NO affect on the status.

I have also un-installed and installed this product
several times with the same problem. Someone else used
the same install CD and is having NO problem with the
product.

Can anyone suggest how to fix this situation ??

I CAN run it in the meantime by clicking
START>Run>winword.exe /a" This will at least allow me to
run until I can resolve this issue..

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi Larry. I have EXACTLY the same problem, only I am using
Win98SE, so it doesn't look like it is an operating system
problem. I shall try deleting the Normal template see if I
get the same result - but running it with the /a switch
works for me. Regards, John

Hi Larry I have had an identical problem and this is how I
fixed it.

I started Word from Run as you said. Then I saved the
blank page as a template. You can't use "Normal.dot", so I
saved it as "Temp.dot". Then I exited and went into Win
Explorer and found the Templates folder. Deleted
Normal.dot and then renamed Temp.dot as Normal.dot.

And it's fixed! Cheers. John
