Word 2000 - toolbar and menu bar have disappeared

I'm not sure why this happened - I closed Word and then opened a document later, and the menu bar and toolbar were gone. All I can see is a ruler at the top of the page. It is this way in blank documents, and any others I open. This has never happened to me before and I don't know how to fix it. I've tried Alt-everything and nothing works. Help!
