Word 2000 very slow performance

I very recently started experiencing very slow performance
in Word 2000. The cursor changes to the hourglass about
every 7 seconds; it takes about 2 seconds to return to
the cursor. While it is in the hourglass typing is not
possible, making work excrutiatingly slow. I have turned
off fast saves and have backup documents set to only every
20 minutes. Nothing seems to help. Notepad and Worpad as
well as Excel and other Office programs work fine.
I have turned off the Norton Virus protection for Office,
again with no effect.
Does anyone have the same problem and can anyone offer any
suggestions?
