Word 2000 will not open and locks up computer

WORD 2000 SR-1 will not open from the desktop icon and the computer locks
up. Upon reboot, various messages indicating WinWord invalid page defaults
such as in GDI.EXE at 0001:0000853b. or KRNL386.exe at 0002:00003109.
However, access to Word through Microsoft Works Suite 2001 is possible. Do I
have to save all of my documents and only then uninstall and then reinstall
Word from my disc, or can I just uninstall and reinstall?
