Word 2000/Windows 2000 hangs opening/saving to mapped network drive-setup for local normal.dot

Another PC has this problem. Now mine does. Appears related to Office
install going south so it can't be repaired or uninstalled. Had to delete
files and clean out registry. Reinstalled, applied SPs, but still happening.
Can open locally if I copy the file. Templates on both PCs set to local
normal.dot Is some information about the dot file other than the
name/location stored, that could account for it? If changes are made to the
local normal template, and it doesn't match what the document expects, would
that cause it to freeze? If so, why would it open locally, if the normal
template was set to local in both cases? Can't find anything on technet.

Word (Office 2002) is suddenly unusable.

Normally, I can copy and paste text to a new document.
Starting yesterday afternoon, I can open a new
document... but whenever I paste the entire program
hangs/ freezes. I've sent many error reports, did the SP3
update, Windows critical updates have all been done. I
ran a full virus check on the computer - nothing.

Is there something new with WORD where it has suddenly
stopped accepting the format used by AOL's instant
messaging system? This is a brand new problem, I've
always been able to save these messages (with emoticons
automatically converted to text).

Another oddity - if I paste the IM to the new document,
then minimize it for a moment, the entire page is blank
when I pull it back up.

Any ideas?
