Word 2000 won't open

Larry

Same as Mike's problem, except on Windows XP Home Edition. Word 2000 has been running fine. Today won't
open. McAfee finds no viruses. Downloaded all Microsoft updates. Still not working.
How does one get to an actual Microsoft support technician?

Hi, Larry,

There are a number of things that will prevent Word (any version on any
Windows) from starting properly. The troubleshooting steps are fairly
simple, but there are quite a few of them. Please read and follow the
procedures at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm.

Pay no attention to anyone who tells you to uninstall and reinstall Office,
Word, or Windows. This is a long operation that won't fix corrupted or
outdated templates or add-ins, which are the usual causes of startup
problems.

Andre,

Please DON'T keep telling people to reinstall Word. The Office installer
deliberately will not replace a pre-existing copy of Normal.dot or any
add-in, and if that's what's corrupt then the reinstallation won't fix the
problem at all. Then folks just get frustrated because they've put in a lot
of work for nothing.

Please read and understand the article at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm, which is there
exactly because we've been through it all before.

My word program will not open either. It starts to open but after the introduction to word 2000 it just keeps thinking and never completely opens. After a few minutes of waiting I hit Control-alt-delete and my computer tells me that my resources are dangerously low. I know that my computer does not have a memory or resource problem. I can open and run many programs at the same time-well, any but word. I cannot open any word document at all. I have searched for cures and reinstalled word several times. I am running out of ideas. I believe that something in word is causing a great drain on my resources as it is trying to open.

I read through the helps on the page you suggested and it does not have any answers that work for my issue. Why is my computer telling me that my resources are dangerously low when I try to open word? I know that my resources do not give me any trouble no matter what other programs or files I open, except for word. I end up having to shut down improperly.

Have you also tried doing a complete reinstall of Word 2000, its possible
that something has gone completely corrupt, its best if you uninstall,
reinstall Word 2000 then reapply all the latest Service Packs & Patches for
Word 2000.

Did you try starting Word with the /a switch?

Could you explain that for me please?
Thank you

You said you looked at the page I mentioned
(http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm). Suzanne referred
to the procedure in paragraph 2(a) of that page:

--------------------
2. If Word crashes as soon as it opens ...
a)
It is most likely to be due to template corruption. To verify
whether this is the case, start Word without templates and add-ins loaded,
to see whether it still crashes: to do this, click the Start button in the
bottom left of your screen, select Run, and type winword.exe /a. (You may
need to specify the full path although you probably won't.)

Note the space before the forward slash! If you miss out that
space, you'll get an error message such as: "Cannot find the file
'winword.exe/a' or one of its components".

The /a switch is intended as a troubleshooting tool only, and
you shouldn't continue to use it to start Word. Any customisations you make
while in this mode will be discarded.

--------------------

Even though this paragraph talks about Word crashing, and you don't think
that applies to your problem, try it anyway. If using the /a switch makes
your problem go away, then the cause of the problem is corruption in a
template or an add-in. That would be the signal to continue with the
remaining steps on the page.

I'd be very happy to hear what the solution to your Word
problem is. I've posted a similar problem of Word locking
my system up everytime I try to open it. Never used to do
that, just started. Thanx in advance for anything you can
share with me to resolve the problem.
