This does not exist in my registry:

(Word 2000):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Options\“STARTUP-PATHâ€

Please don't give up on me!

In particular, note that if you think that there is something wrong with the
registry entries for Word, you can delete the whole Word branch (with Word
closed). See also http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissingMenusEtc.htm.

I did as you suggested and deleted the Word folder in the registry. When I
tried to open Word it began to install the program, asked for the original
Office 2000 cd and I am back in business.
