word 2001 -encountered error must shut down

When I am in word and I try to open certain files that are
not anything that I remember saving and have a $ symbol in
them or if I have to many folders open at once a box pops
up that says " mircosft word has encountered an error and
must shut down" and I am about to push it out the real
window. I try and always delete the $ marked files, and I
was told by the most computer literate person I know that
I should check the "no" when prompted to "save to
normal.file when closing down word. So, anyone, any ideas,
oh I even went into a repair program which had me
reinstall word 2001 and reboot, but it didn't work. Any
suggestions would be great. Thank you scott

What you are seeing are temp files created by Word and Windows that should
disappear when you close Word properly. If you have a crash, it will abandon
these files.
