Word 2002 background constantly doing 'something'

Every 6 seconds I get the hourglass and my typing is interrupted. My Autosave
is set for every 10 minutes, so this is something else. This happens
regardless of which View I am using. This problem only started a few weeks
ago but I can't seem to find out what is the source of these interruptions.
This is making Word very tiresome to use. has anyone else had this problem?
