word 2002 error on opening a specific document

Chip Orange

We've got a problem that seems to follow the setting of some option that's
stored in the user portion of the registry. We've got many machines and
many word users, and one problem document.

One user can open it fine using any pc, but all other users end up crashing
(with the faulting module being mso.dll) when they try to open it.

The "lucky" user has been a word user for some time, and can't remember what
options he may have changed from the defaults. Should have mentioned we've
got roaming profiles enabled, so his registry settings follow him to each
pc.

thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Chip,

What does the document contain? Tables? Bullet/numbered list?

You can try renaming both the Word\Data and Word\Options keys found
under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0

However this will reset the majority of the defaults found in
Tools/Options, Tools/AutoCorrect and a few misc dialog boxes. Not to
mention it would be nice to know exactly what is causing the error.

The document contains many complex structures, including imported excell
spreadsheets and many many graphics.

We've actually tried renamimg the entire office\10 registry key, which did
not help, so we're assuming the "lucky" user has changed something from the
default setting which is allowing him to work through the problem.

Hi Chip,

Can other users open the document if they start Word using the /a
switch first? Go to Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

No, this does not help.

We've found that the problem occurs when opening the document, but not if
you create a new document and insert the older (possibly corrupted?) one.
There does seem to be some sort of issue with page 29, which has multiple
graphics overlayed onto one another.

We can view it ok with word viewer, but this page, even when we try the
"insert" trick, will cause Word to crash.

Does Word have a repair document utility or feature?

Thanks.

Hi Chip,

You can try using the "Open and Repair" command found in the Open
dialog box. Click the down arrow to the right of the Open command for
a list of Open choices.
