word 2002 freezes

On Windows 2000 workstations we recently upgraded office
97 pro to office xp pro and users are complaining that
word freezes while open and in use and has to be closed.
No such problems prior to the upgrade. The upgrade method
was custom and the old apps replaced. Both windows 2000
workstations and office xp have current updates. We have
tried an uninstall and reinstall of office xp with same
result but the problem is not predictable in occurrence.
If you have run across this and have a recomendation it
will be appreciated.

Is this a Windows 2000 Server SP3? If so, search for the MSLB article on SMB
Packet Signing which is a bug introduced by SP3.
