Word 2002 hangs when attaching template

I have a 220 page word document that had Normal.dot as the attached
template. I then saved the document file as a template (it has a large
number of styles in it) and removed all but the first page to make the
template only one page. I then attempted to Attach the newly saved (and
closed) template to the 220 page document after making a single change to
one of the styles in the template. When I do so, Word hangs after I click
OK. I've left it for more than 10 minutes and it does not recover.

I have successfully attached the same template to two other much shorter
(1-10 pages) documents without troubles. Prior to this attachment, the
attached template listed for these other 2 docs was not the Normal template
but the templates listed as being attached were in fact invalid paths.

For completeness: the template is saved in a folder that is not the default
Template folder, but it doesn't appear to matter.

The question begs why? What is the purpose? It sounds like some form of
Chinese Water Torture.

If you attach the template made from the original document to the original
document without having changed anything, does it still hang?
