Word 2002 in Works Suite 2004 fails to open

Word 2000 refuses to open. Error message says it is not
installed for this user, and that the program must be
reinstalled. It was working perfectly before. No
configuration changes were made. I have seen the same
symptoms on another new computer using Works 2003 Suite.
Repeated reinstalling usually results in working for a
while, then the same old song. Seems like an
incompatible marriage. Can it be fixed? Has the
problem, obviously not an isolated case, been addressed
by Microsoft?

Uninstalling/Reinstalling hardly ever achieves anything because all the
registry entries and global templates and add-ins remain. Try the following
