Word 2002 locks up if I show insertions and deletions

I document created in Word 2000 still opens in Word 2000 with all insertions and deletions shown. When I open the same document in Word 2002 it locks up about half way through the document. If I disable show deletions and insertions it opens the document. Is this a known issue? Is there a fix or patch? Will I only be able to view deletions and insertions in Word 2000?
