Word 2002 SP2 Opens Slowly

I have Word 2002 SP2 on WinXP. The computer has 256MB of
RAM and a Celeron proc at 1.7ghz. It was provided by
Gateway on one of their systems. Word opens and closes
very slowly. If I try to click on the text area during
opening, the screen will turn entirely white and the only
thing displayed will be the window's blue bar (I forget
the appropriate name of it). Even the toolbars disappear
when this happens. I have tried updating and disabling
the Norton plug-in, but it has had no effect on the
slowness. Any suggestions?? Thank you for your time.

I know this sounds crazy, but set your date back to Jan 6th and it
will work fine. It seems to be a NAV error downloaded on the 7th.
Don't update NAV until they have a fix after you re-set the date or it
will come back.

Nope. Norton's Verisign Certificate expired on 7 January. The download had
nothing to do with the problem. Back-dating the system clock will screw
auditing, so the best solution is to disable the Office Plug-in.
