Word 2002 Text Box nonsense

Just when you think you're getting your head around how to use the
better-than-they-used-to-be-but-still-very-difficult-to-learn-by-intuition
Microsoft Office package (I grew up with the excellent inbuilt help of the
likes of WordPerfect 5.1 and Lotus 123 for DOS) but along comes Office 2002
and a Word Text Box now comes inside some sort of Painting Canvas Box. Not
wanting the spurious Canvas, or Painting Canvas or whatever they call it, I
deleted it, but sadly that deletes the inner Text Box too. If I want the
text box centre I must first centre the silly spurious box and then drag the
text box to fill it. Can anyone explain what this new 'feature' is supposed
to achieve and if possible how to disable it?!
