Word 2002 Won't Open Documents

B

Benjamin

I have a user who's windows xp home edition computer has
Microsoft Office 2002 installed on it. Every time she
tries to double click on a document from her my documents
folder, from an email atachment, from anywhere, word
opens, but gives her the screen where you have to choose
your type of encoding. It's almost as if her documents
are corrupted or something.

I have tried opening the documents on another machine and
they open just fine. It seems to be a problem with her
installation of word. I have had her do a detect and
repair, a reinstallation, and a complete uninstall and
reinstall. None of these options have seemed to work. I
have had her do a complete system scan with her Symantec
Antivirus, while in safe mode, and she did not get any
viruses to show.

My question is, has anyone else seen this problem before,
and if so, how did you go about fixing it? I would
appreciate any help that you may be able to give.

Thanks everyone!

Ben

She is using symantec antivirus corporate edition. There
is no office plug in that I know of. If there is, and
I'm wrong, how does one go about disabling it?

If a previous version of NAV was installed, which contained the
plug-in, and Norton CE was installed later the DLL for the plug-in
could still be registered.

First search for officeav.dll and if found go to Start/Run and run the
following command:

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"

In the above example the path for "Officeav.dll" would depend on the
location of the DLL.
