word 2002 xp will not run on Vista

I just installed my copy of MS Office XP standard on my new Vista machine and
upgraded to Office XP SP3. All the applications run except Word. Each time
I run word Vista tells me Word has stopped. Is this a fixable problem? I
have uninstalled and reinstalled it 3 times.

Yes, I can print from the other Office apps.

My gut feeling is that the old normal.dot must be corrupt or you have an
incompatible legacy add-in.
