Word 2002

I recently purchased an external floppy drive for my
laptop. I can open JPEG and Excel documents directly from
a floppy but not Word documents. When I attempt to open a
Word document from a floppy Word does not respond. If I
copy the Word document from the floppy onto my desktop
and double click on the decktop icon Word will open the
document. Any suggestions?

Hi, Mark,

Your computer has unwittingly saved you from the probable disaster of
a corrupted document. I don't know why Microsoft doesn't print this in
big letters on the splash screen, but here it is (for about the
thousandth time in this newsgroup):

NEVER open a Word document for editing directly from any removable
media (floppy drive, CD-RW, Zip drive, etc.). NEVER save a Word
document directly onto removable media. ALWAYS open and save Word
documents on the hard drive, and (while Word is closed) COPY the file
to/from the removable media.

The issue involves the temporary files Word creates for every open
document. They often don't fit on a floppy disk, and they can't be
protected against removal of the disk while the file is open. See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm for more
details.
