Word 2003 and normal.dot

S

Scott Schaffer

I just recently upgraded to Word 2003 and have noticed that normal.dot appears at the top of the recently used file list all the time. Also, word is very slow to close as it always flashes to a blank document (normal.dot I think) a couple of times then closes altogether.

I think this started happening when I changed the location of where word looks for normal.dot. I have changed it back to the original location but the same thing is still happening.

Thanks for any help

Start by checking the box for "Prompt to save Normal template" on the Save
tab of Tools | Options so that Word will have to ask you before it can save
Normal.dot. Then look for the poorly written add-in (for that's almost
certainly the culprit) that is causing this behavior. Common offenders are
the Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus and the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in
for Word. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm and “Word
prompts me to save changes to the Normal.dot template” at

Found it or them.

Omnipage and paperport both installed some add-ins that seem to be causing the problem. The articles you gave links for were quite helpful, as were you.

Thank you very much.
