Word 2003 - APP closes, rather than Document, when you "hit the red X" in the upper right.

This may not be the right group, since this isn't a true error, just an
unexpected/unexplained interface change.

The subject behavior changes in the course of a day--or at least it can
switch between the normal behavior (document closes) and the unexpected
behavior (application closes) without any reason that the user has
perceived.

Can somebody who knows the Word UI in 2003 explain what is happening here?
How can I know which will happen, and how can I switch between the two
states?

So far, I haven't found this relevant, but will bring up the machine in
question remotely and see if anything strikes me--or whether I can describe
it better.

This isn't a crash as far as I can see--it's a change in functionality--but
maybe it really is a crash....hmmm.

If so, it seems to depend on some operation on the machine in the course of
the day to be triggered.

If there are multiple documents open, clicking on the Red X will close the
document. If there is only one document open, it will close the application.
Clicking on the (lower) black X will never close the application but will
close the document.

See the MVP FAQ: <URL: http://www.mvps.org/word/> which is awesome!

Discussing this with the regular user today, we agreed that what happens is
we close the document with the lower black X, and Word closes as well. No
error message, just goes away.

This does now sound like a crash, and I'll check out the MVP site reference
in more depth.
