Word 2003 can only open one file at a time

I cannot open more than one Word document at once. They
seem to be open if you look at the two separate icons
open files appear as. However, one of the two must be
double-clicked again to "re-open" the file.

I am about to return my Word 2003 and go back to a
previous version that works.

I believe what you are referring to is SDI (Single Document Interface ) vs
MDI (Mutliple Document Interface) used in Word97.
Open the Options dialog from the Tools Menu and turn off Windows in Taskbar
located on the View Tab.

Word 2003 can open more than 1 document at a time as did previous versions
of Word.
