Word 2003 can't open document file any more

David Scherfgen

Hello,

I've got a serious problem: a very important document can't be opened by
Microsoft Word 2003 any more. I have old backups, but it would be a lot of
work to bring them up to date.

When I open the document, an error message pops up. It tells me that there
was an error (no specific error or error code is given) when Word tried to
open the file. It tells me that I should check the access rights for the
file (I've done so), make sure that there is enough free memory (there are
several hundred MB of free memory) and that I should open the file with the
Text Recovery feature - I've tried this, but I still get the same error
message.

Also, the "Repair and open" feature doesn't work - I always get that error
message.
When I opened the file with an Hex editor, it looked quite normal.
I tried to open it on another computer, but it's always the same.

I'm desperately hoping that someone can help me!

Thanks

Are you trying to open this file from a floppy or other removable media? If
so, copy it to the HD first (in case you haven't already corrupted it by
trying to open it). And see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm (though, from the
sound of it, those tips won't help).

I've found the Open & Repair option to be excellent in WD2003. If that
fails, it would indicate that the document it badly corrupt.

Maybe you should just uninstall Office 2003 and revert
back to whatever version you were using before this
happened. I encountered some errors in Office 2003 and did
just that and reverted back to Office XP.
