Word 2003 - can't open file

R

Ross

I need help with the following:

When I receive Word files from users with earlier
versions than Word 2003 I can't always open them. On the
odd occassion I can open and edit them - but once saved
(on my system) I can't seem to open them again on my
system. I can however open these edited files on earlier
versions of Word on other PCs on our network, without any
difficulty.

I have downloaded the 'available patches' from the
Microsoft Site - but the error remains.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Ross,

Just to verify, are you able to open previously created Word documents
or is this limited to documents created in earlier versions?

Do you use Norton AV?

Hi Beth

Let me explain it this way - I will receive a document
from a colleague (which has been generated in Word
97/2000/Xp) which I am able to open and edit (in Word
2003). However once I have completed the edits, saved
and closed the document I cannot open it again in Word
2003, but can mail the modified document back to my
colleague, who can then open it in Word 97/2000/Xp.

There are occasions where the problem does not occur and
I am able to open it. Consequently I am stumped.

As for Norton AV, our system is Network Associates
VShield - if that is of any worth.

Thanks

Ross

Hi again

The message reads:
"Word was unable to read this document. It may be
corrupt. Try one or more of the following:
* Open and repair the file.
* Open the file with Text Recovery Converter

Show Help>>"

I have tried both suggestions. The former doesn't help,
while the latter gives me the document without any
formatting or figures and in a rather messy condition.
As I have said I don't think it is corrupt since I can
open the document in an earlier version of Word.

Let's see if that's of any worth.
